Westside Church is one of the largest evangelical churches in Canada. They are known for non-conventional sermons, a younger following, and most recently, their building of worship. Westside Church purchased The Centre for Performing Arts in 2013 and established the building as their Vancouver campus. Unlike conventional churches, the newly coined “The Centre” is a stylistically modern building accentuated by large glass structures.
The exterior of the building also features large, decorative lights and signs, which have been a headache for Westside Church since the purchase. The exterior lighting system consisted of metal halide and fluorescent lights in the signs, which failed regularly and consumed an enormous amount of energy, costing Westside Church tens of thousands of dollars in maintenance and energy each year. The decorative exterior spotlights weren’t very bright preventing the building’s architecture from being fully visible in the night.
Troubled by the annual expenses and the current lighting system’s ineffectiveness, Westside Church turned to Relight for a solution that both reduced their expenses and helped them spread their message of faith.
After a thorough assessment of The Centre’s exterior lights and sign boxes, Relight decided a full retrofit was the ideal long-term solution. All the metal halide lamps and fluorescent lamps in the sign boxes were upgraded to LEDs. The new LED system uses 83% less energy than the old fluorescent one. Furthermore, all the new LED bulbs have 5-year extended warranty and a 10-year projected lifetime, meaning minimal repair and replacement costs for the next 10 years.
Through the retrofit, Westside Church is expected to save 81,630 kWh of energy annually, which is equal to $9,400 in annual energy savings. They are also expected to save another $3,750 annually in repair and replacement costs, bringing their total annual saving to over $13,000. Relight also used its BC Power Alliance member privileges to help Westside Church secure a $9,500 lighting rebate, which reduced the total project payback time to a mere 14 months. Over the 10-year project lifetime, Westside Church is expected to save a total of $130, 000.
The newly installed LEDs has made a significant aesthetics improvement. The formerly dim signs and messaging are now clearly visible from blocks away. The Centre itself is also more vibrant and visible from distance.
Alleviated from their lighting problem, Westside Church can now focus all their attention and resources to spreading their message of faith.
